RE: NAS Help Needed

I do have a single bay NAS(QNAP TS128) in a cupboard in the living room.
Occasionally I do hear the HD working.
Not when pulling audio from it but a backup or any other massive read/write is audible.

Possible solutions:
No other location possible? Somewhere close to your router?
A fanless NAS with SSD like Qnap HS251+
Home plug (Ethernet over the powerlines)
As others mentioned, terminating the cable yourself ( have done this a couple of times)
Today's routers often offers DLNA as well, attach an external HD to the router.

RAID2 is the trick to improve performance (striping). Do you really need that for audio?
Observe that in case of striping if one disk fails, the other is useless too.

Nothing wrong with streaming but this means DLNA (unless you buy a streamer that can access a share on a NAS e.g. SMB/CIFS )
Check for gapless playback as it is often not supported.
If you use custom tags, they are not supported by DLNA
If you are in to classical check minim server: http://www.thewelltemperedcomputer.com/SW/Streaming/MinimServer.htm
