DAC or Soundcard??

Whats the best way to go as far as playback sound quality for under $500. Im currently using a cheap Soundblaster Xfi Xtreme Music soundcard in Audio Creation mode with bitmatched playback enabled, I use Foobar for playback using the Creative ASIo drivers and I rip with EAC, speakers are a pair of active studio monitors. Im basically looking for better sound quality then the Xfi offers. And am trying to chose between a new soundcard or a DAC. Im looking to spend under $500. Whats everyones opinions?? Ive heard the Lynx l22 reccomended alot but its a bit out of my price range, but if its really significantly better than anything else available for $500 I may be willing to spend the extra money.
thanks
