I think it will be around for a while, at least on the pro side. Metric Halo, which developed the first firewire interface (DAC + ADC + mic/line preamps) has been working on a field-installable USB2 circuit for all their products. They demo'd a prototype a couple years ago, and reports were enthusiastic. Sound quality is said to be good, and USB allows vastly increased capacity (channels and plugins) compared to firewire, with extremely low latency. They picked USB2 due to the lack of an audio standard in USB3.
Though it's been a long wait, MH says they are nearing the end and will release the kit at the same time that they release the USB version of all their products. They are a small company but have a sizable installed base, and get to brag every year about the number of Grammy-winning recordings made on their gear. Their original products created a pretty big product category. We'll see if they make it to the finish line.
