RE: Playing music files directly from a NAS.

Using balanced can help to mask the problem and make the symptoms much less but in my experience is no panacea to completely solve it. I have found that the problems associated with unsolved emi issues can still affect fully balanced systems in ways you wish it wouldn't ie 50/60hz in the speakers etc etc.... The best approach would be to solve the emi problems as much as possible and use balanced to get both great things together.

I try to imagine in space the existence of possible low impedance current "loops". For example If I want to have a star ground and decide my pc is the star "point" but I want to record from a single ended device which shares ground between left and right channels such as a typical low cost phone stage output. The grounds are shorted together in the pc at the analog to digital converter, and they are also shorted together in this source device. Now consider the interconnecting cables...probably most often some coax with rca terminals but certainly a hot and ground line for single ended signals....the ground forms the loop through the circuit boards and interconnects. Maxwell says loops are inductors...inductors can be involved in mutual inductance to other loops in the universe via magnetic coupling through the permeability of the objects around it. voila! the evil evil noise demon is upon you
