I got Windows 7 on a computer just one year ago. It was already replaced at that time, but anyway I've been very happy with it.
So I just got a chance to play with Windows 10. A friend of mine got a Dell laptop and was having some problems. His brand new laptop was crashing every day or two and rebooting. I've had a long good experience with Dell computers and I was sort of shocked that they would send a new computer that is broken right out of the box.
So anyway, that turned out to be a display audio driver. An update from the Dell website fixed that. But again, why did Dell not send it with their own working driver?
His HP printer had some freezes. I got a new driver from the HP site and that fixed that.
His display driver frequently crashes, the screen goes dark and there is a message saying display driver has been restored. There is a newer Intel driver, but it is not yet blessed by Dell for use on this product. On my own computer, I would have installed it anyway, but I just put a band-aid on the problem, increasing the display time out in the registry.
There are a number of other errors in the Event Viewer. Again, since it's not my machine and it's working, I'm not messing with those.
Meanwhile a 2nd friend has a new HP laptop with Windows 10 and his Synaptics touchpad settings are reset each time he boots up. This turns out to be a known Windows 10 bug that will have to be fixed by Microsoft. There is another registry band-aid, but it's not great.
In short, if you don't like bugs and errors, there seems to be a fair bit of work ahead of you with Windows 10.
In contrast, I had exactly one bug with Windows 7. One of my svchost tasks had a memory leak and was eating up my RAM. It was annoying. I found a Microsoft patch specifically for people who had this problem, not a general Windows 7 fix, and that solved it. I don't have errors in my Event Viewer. Everything just runs.
I don't see the slightest benefit to "upgrading" and in fact I use a great little program called GWX Control Panel after every update to stamp out all of Microsoft's annoying efforts to push me to Windows 10.
If I had to use it, I'd get it to work. But Windows 7 already works.
