In terms of rippers, you will not do better than EAC on Windows and XLD on the Mac. To do a perfect rip, you need to thoroughly and correctly set up the program (as in the linked guide). If you do this, there is nothing else that will do a better job. These have been extensively tested by people who care about perfect rips. The others have not.
Foobar2000 is a fairly primitive program compared to jriver. However, it lets me access the flac files on my computer and play them, which is all that I really want to do.
