A DAC is a box doing the DA conversion.
Inside this box there is a chip, the DAC chip doing the actual DA conversion.
Most of the time this is a chip by the usual suspects like Wolfson, ESS, TI, AKM, etc.
Chord is one of the very few brands that rolled their own DAC. This is implemented in a FPGA.
