RE: Speaker recommendations?

Try the Polk Audio Monitor 50's. A pair will run about $190 delivered to your door: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882290205

(The listed price on that link is per-speaker, not per pair, since some people like to get an odd number to do multi-channel surround sound.)

They are much slimmer and nicer looking for your living space that what you've got, and they will sound good too.

If you want to go a tad larger, there is a Monitor 60, and if you want to go smaller they have some bookshelf speakers. They all also come in black, if that matches your home better.

My sister has a pair of Monitor 60s in her apartment with an older Harman Kardon receiver, and the combo sounds quite nice, especially considering the constraints on placement in her living room.
