I use an iPod and iTunes with my PC's; therefore the most convenient format for me is Apple Lossless. Apple Lossless data is stored within an MP4 container with the filename extension .m4a.
I believe Apple will be around for a long long time and so will its dominance of the consumer music business. I personally think any of the current lossless formats are technically as good as any other.
As far as believing that lossless is not as complete as an uncompressed WAV file I humbly disagree. Lossless is like ZIP compression (another lossless compression). You can restore the complete file from lossless compression any time you please. The restoration will be bit for bit because that's the way the algorythm was written and tested millions times over and over.
JMHO.
