Hey hey - someone ready to reinvent computing... again
So, here is the deal. Like most people who inherently consider computer playback to be in some way suspicious or inferior because its alien or cheap; you are only focusing on one aspect of the problem.
Robert Joe has it absolutely right. kgiessler is too.
A viable solution requires a systems approach to ripping, file management, tagging, playlist construction and file sharing. Because doing this provides benefits beyond bit perfect reproduction. That is only the beginning.
For instance, you have already determined that while .wav is the native format it does not meet the needs of a PC server/playback environment.
The most likely reason you will move to a new format is not to improve the sound but to improve the rest of the equation.
Meanwhile if you run a Mac, use iTunes. If you run a PC start reading about EAC, Foobar, secret rabbits and lord knows what else.
