I think a simple optical transceiver between computer and DAC might work. When the DAC buffer is empty or you hit the reset button the DAC wakes up the transceiver on it's end and notifies the computer it is ready for a refill. The computer sends the song files to the DAC and when it is done the DAC shuts off the transceiver until the buffer is empty or you hit the reset button.
Your now playing feature could be on the computer, whatever it sent to the DAC could be displayed on the computer.
I agree you give up bells and whistles like fast forward, rewind, etc. It is a minimalist player like putting on a record and playing it until you decide to get up and walk across the room and stop it. The DAC is in complete control and only gets data via an optical line when it wants it.
