Is "Exclusive Mode" something you set in the player application, or in Windows?
I use Windows as necessary for my day to day but otherwise I'm on Mac for audio. On Mac "Exclusive Mode" is set by the player application but there is also the ability to easily silence System Sounds on Mac so they don't sound off while the music is playing.
