Yes I have used an external powered drive. The best sound is using an external server streaming PCM so transcoding flac or anything else to PCM in the server. Decoding on the Touch is not as good. Running the server on the Touch playing wav is slightly better than external server and flac decoding on Touch. Flac played from internal server is slightly worse than flac decoded on Touch coming from external server. So the gist is PCM from external server is considerably better than any other configuration and all the others are fairly similar although not identical.
I have not heard any difference between bus powered and external powered USB drives.
The Touch itself does not support UpNp, the external server does. The internal server does not. So if you have an external SBS server you can use it as a UpNp client sending the stream to the Touch.
The internal server is the same as the external server but with some features turned off. If you want to you CAN turn UpNp back on and use it as a client. They have it turned off to save memory. If you start up the server manually and DON'T plug in a USB drive you can probably get away with using the UpNp connectivity. But using it with a USB drive as well might be a recipe for weird things happening as it runs out of resources.
