What I have found is that an external server sounds better than the internal server. An external server transcoding flac to PCM or sending wav as PCM sounds quite a bit better than decoding flac on the touch. I could find no difference between sending wav or decoded flac. There definitely is a difference between decoding flac or wav on the Touch itself. Once you get that done a wired connection sounds better than wireless.
Once you get all that done the hardware of the server doesn't make any difference. You do have to make the above settings in the server, but the motherboard used, how much ram it has, what services it has running etc don't make any difference as long as it can handle the tasks.
One of the BIG advantages of the SB system is that you CAN put the server off in another room where it is far away from the stereo system.
