" a bit more compatible with things like MS project files, spreadsheets,"
And that is the problem with using applications like Open Office. Communication and compatibility outside of your home network. I ended up with lots of old .odf files that I cannot open unless I re-install Open Office. I cannot even open them to convert them!
Microsoft's suite of "utility" programs is now called Office 365. It does indeed require a subscription but not, at least here in the UK, $100 (or equivalent) per month but 7.99 gbp or around 60 gbp for an annual subscription to the Home version. I bought into it to get Outlook which is just about the best mail client I can think of. At least it recognises UK date format (unlike some) and does not arbitrarily delete files ( like another which is infamous for doing this). But of course I also get Excel, Word and Powerpoint which as they are what the majority of businesses use too ( at least here) the compatibility issue is largely solved though this is not so important since I retired. The applications also seem largely bug free by now. Included is some cloud storage the size of which suffices as a backup for my needs in this area ( not enough for my music library though).
