Do these streamer setups sound great? Of course! Do computer based audio systems sound great?
for me, the answer is: both .
I will always have a computer system in my office to handle a number of tasks. From an entertainment standpoint, it houses both my music and video libraries. Tweaks? None really other than being a capable box. Quad core i7 processor with the computational power of a Cray 2 (whetstone/dhrystone), lots of memory, storage and OS running on an SSD. LMS software is configured for "large memory" use and server does the "heavy lifting" of FLAC decompression.
I employ a diverse range of "streamer" devices: Squeezebox Touch, several iOS devices running iPeng, Oppo BD-103, Roku and lest I forget - Pono player on the server feeding the in home system and out by the pool. I just sold my previous DAC and once the funds are available, I'll be trying out a uRendu for the main system. I confess that I like the elegance of using a simple IoT box (capable of being battery powered) already optimized for audio use in the listening room while the (noisy) computer is far away.
I'm with you, however, in that I see no use for "dedicated streamer/server" units like the multi-thousand dollar Aurender products with built in drives. For me, that defeats what I consider a key benefit to computer based audio: use of a single library to feed multiple devices.
I am agnostic as to the interface used. I used S/PDIF from Touch to ARC DAC7 because that was optimum for those devices. I will be using USB from uRendu to DAC8 because that is optimum for those.
