RE: Mods

Yes, the QB-9 had a nicely designed input, and special interface software IIRC for dealing with the USB connection. I think the USB interfaces on PCs vary widely though, and probably even moreso on laptops, or maybe it was the OS and all the standard background routines. It just didn't sound nearly as good as what I heard other peoples' sounding, and for all I know they put a fair bit of work into PC optimization, I didn't know about that stuff yet (~6 years ago).

Whatever it was, I think I was at a time where I didn't feel like dicking around with stuff, sometimes I'm like that, right now I'm more in the mood, sort of "need a project" mode.

Yeah, I wasn't suggesting you (or I) might be the exact (price-point) market for the Alpha USB, just mentioning it from a design choice standpoint: they look quite particular. It sounds like it's a gadget I could go for though.

Another USB-> S/PDIF somebody mentioned to me is the Hydra Z, somewhat cheaper. I also have had good experience with AES/EBU in DACs, so it's not like I'm unwilling to change, it's more of sticking with something I'm satisfied with. And that way I could still play with all the USB-output-oriented gadgets, and still easily connect them to any of my digital-input systems of varying ages (via S/PDIF).
