RE: Ignorant question

GOOD questions.

The short answer is no. You need some sort of software to send the files over the network to the streamer. That could be Roon..or JRiver, MiniMServer, or any other DLNA compliant package. They generally run light, take very few resources, and allow you to use a mobile network device like an Ipad to control playback.

Now, you CAN connect your HDD to a router and configure some sort of home sharing. I am not 100% sure about this. Best of luck,and hopefully others can fill in the gaps.
