Contrary to what some may have thought my stance was, TV audio is the "perfect" place to use Toslink (esp. for 5.1). Anything TV-related is a whole ball of messy RFI/EMI/just-plain-crap, plus it may mess with your local power (mine do...), so good to have the TV/displays on their own AC circuit, or with the fridge/furnace/washing machine etc. if you're not too fussy. (I am fairly fussy, so a separate circuit for me.)
I "serve" my music files from a separate room, as far away from the audio system as possible in the house. Wired ethernet of course, but I do run wifi at the absolute minimum (router) power that gives me "1 bar" on the wifi remote (it controls the server).
IOW I do what I can to minimize radiated interference. A la Todd, a quick walk-around all your audio/computer gear with an AM radio tells a story, and the real story is much worse than even that one.
