Home Computer Audio Asylum

Music servers and other computer based digital audio technologies.

None, but it depends on your needs..

There seems to be an emerging opinion that locally played music files sound better than via a NAS. Some are now trying NAS distribution using optical connection (instead of CAT 5) to try to overcome this perceived limitation.

My view is that unless you require multiple access (end) points and/or the NAS is to serve multiple users then straightforward external USB drives like your Seagate are a simpler and arguably preferable way to go. You will need three of them ( master and two backups). I use also HDDs of different makes so as to minimise faults common to a batch of production. Two backups because if the master drive fails, is removed and replaced by a backup drive (as happened to me recently) then you will still have one backup remaining. Also one of the backups could be stored off site. Of course these backup options could still apply if NAS is your eventual choice. I am a Windows user so you may have to translate the above into the world of Apple.
