Do the math.

Figure out how much it costs to store an album at the various formats. I think you will be shocked to find that DXD is costing less than you would pay to store a album on cassette tape. If you were to go to 15 IPS reel to reel tape you would be able to buy a hard drive for around the price of the tape required for a single album.

As to the DAC itself, there is essentially no manufacturing cost for the higher sampling rate and bit depth, so it is a simple matter of specsmanship to provide the higher rates once one has an IO system that runs at an adequate speed, such as USB 2.0 or Firewire. The signal processing inside decent DAC chips is already at 48 bits, so there is very little logic required to accept 32 bit input rather than 24 bit input. There is also little cost involved in running at the higher sampling rate. Many high-end DAC chips already work at much higher clock rates.
