Logical diagnosis is an excellent thing. The item above does not seem to be mentioned. The fact that you can run your computer's SPDIF output through another unit tells me that your motherboard may not have an isolation transformer on the SPDIF. Do you have an optical option on the mobo?
Its either that or your PC power supply is throwing grunge onto the voltage rails. Check to see if there's a way to jumper on the MB for SPDIF isolation.
