I use a combination of the two...

Hi, Rod,

I record LPs with a Tascam and use VinylStudio to clean up ticks and pops (and occasionally split tracks) but leave the recording levels as is. I use Audacity for normalization. You can choose to normalize each channel individually, which might work to level those unbalanced tracks. I've also used VinylStudio to boost a diminished channel a few dBs (under the Filter Settings - Graphic Equalizer) and then use Audacity to normalize the channels as a pair. You could try both methods and see which is better.

One thing I found right away is that if I include the LP recordings in a playlist with downloaded HD files or CD rips I have to boost the volume levels of the LP files quite a bit and the sound level change going back to a HD or CD rip file can be a shock if I don't first turn the volume down. So I started normalizing the LP recordings to -1 dB and Audacity does a good job of bringing up the levels without causing distortion or clipping. That's using the +12 dB recording input level with the Tascam DA-3000.

Sorry if you already knew this stuff; maybe it'll be of some use to others.

Regards,
Tom
