" USB is USB whether its inside or out of your DAC."Well yes, obviously. So?
"I get that people are "still" using computers, so for them I guess the USB mess is what they require."
I'm not sure why you consider it to be a "USB mess" when it works perfectly for the majority of audiophiles. Your Rendu is "still a computer" and realize that many of these 'streamers' are based on small "systems on a chip" (SoC) and even PC motherboards with USB built-in.
I suppose they could add SPDIF circuitry (and a BNC) at extra cost but why do that when most DACs and most users today are on USB? For others like yourself, there are optional USB/SPDIF converters, at extra cost.
I use a USB/SPDIF converter when I run my microRendu into an ancient Accuphase CDP/DAC. Problem solved w/o raising the cost of the Rendu or other 'streamers' for everyone, including the majority of users who don't need SPDIF.
