I don't design cells, or chargers, but...

I do have a lot of lithium-ion cells and chargers here for my various flashlights and have learned the safety concerns over the almost 4 years of playing with them.

LiFePO4 is a safer chemistry than both the older LiCoO2 (cobalt oxide) and LiMn2CO4 (manganese oxide.) We now have hybrid chemistries that are using nickel, aluminum and other combinations that are between the cobalt and Iron chemistries when it comes to thermal runaway temperature, resulting in venting with flame.

Trickle charging just isn't something that li-ions like, so don't do it.
