When a person cannot explain something in simple to understand terms it is often a sign that they don't understand it themselves. Some even get defensive and hostile.Broadly, 'digital manipulation' in this case just means altering a photo with some software tool(s). Think Photoshop.
This can be done to make technical corrections to a photo for proper white balance, sharpness, color saturation, etc. It can also be used creatively as an art form. And it's sometimes controversial in some applications like making a model's skin perfect, shaping a woman's figure, etc.
For digital manipulation applied to audio, I would think along the lines of DSP for digital room correction, EQ, bass management, etc.
