RE: You know what's interesting about digital photography?

I was being facetious to make a point about how "objectivist" audio nerds make a hobby out of demanding that everyone stick to a minimum acceptable standard from 30+ years ago, while nobody seems to make an issue out of the megapixel race.

To play the devil's advocate, a 1920x1080 display is only 2MP, and 4MP is enough to produce a high quality 8x10 print. So I was going to argue that the only use case requiring greater than 4MP resolution is in producing professional quality large format prints. You brought up a good point about digital zoom. But even still, modern digital SLRs are limited by their optics rather than their sensor resolution. The last time I researched lenses was a couple years ago, so my info may be a little out of date, but I recall that I would need to spend around $1k for a fixed FX portrait lens to take advantage of the 12MP sensor resolution of my wife's Nikon D90. A good fast zoom lens might achieve something like 8MP equivalent resolution, while a typical consumer wide zoom would be 4-6MP. So it is a bit eye rolling to see 50+ megapixel DSLRs on the market now, and my wife even has a 41MP sensor in her phone!

In audio, we have people who seemingly make it their life's work to prevent adoption of a digital audio standard better than CD. In the photography world, there are some people who find the megapixel war to be pointless and amusing, but I don't hear of people trolling digital photography forums demanding that hobbyists perform DBTs to prove their latest gear is better.
