For running a stupid audio stream that's causing less than 0.6% CPU load
on a RPI B+ I don't need a full blown PC or MAC and tweaks as much worth as the PC. That's what you call "appropriate for a certain job" now.The same is valid for the powersupply. I'm running separated high quality 5V supplies for my ARM boards and SATA discs as long as I'm running these boards. And that's quite a while by now.

You might want to give the new RPI2 and Volumio a try. It'll cost you
$35. I guess you can spare that. Quality 5V supplies you probably have around anyhow. SW is free. And Volumio is tweaked for good sound already.
You can control it via iOS/Android. You can use network shares to avoid local drives.
