Re: Considering Squeezebox -- Please help

Thanks for all the feedback. From this thread and other research in the last day, I think the NAS does not make sense. I have an old Dell Pentium III 450 that I can strip and dedicate to music. A 300 gig Seagate external HD -- 7,200 RPM, 8 mb buffer -- (which should be enough for now since I'll be using EAC and Flac) can be had from Compusa for about $150 with rebates. A pretty cheap solution. Actually does anyone think this drive is too cheap? Will it be sufficient for serving music?

I'm still in a quandry over the Squeezebox 2. I'll be using this mainly for critical listening, and am used to my Musical Fidelity A5, A308, and Gallo Ref 3's. For me a pretty nice system. I'd like this move be a step up sonically as well as in convenience. What I've read about USB DACs says their advantage is not in more accurate data being fed, but in the timing. So why go through the expense of a Waveterminal and cable rather than just get the USB DAC. Then again, my ears aren't perfectly golden, so I may be worrying about margins that I wouldn't hear anyway.

From what I've read in the last couple of days. The modded Squeezebox2 could be the DAC solution by itself. Has anyone compared the Bolder or Red Wine mods directly to high end players or dacs. I would love to get reactions.

Thanks again for everyone's help.
