Tillman could have got it from any number of sources. He was very opposed to the war in Iraq, to the extent he called it "totally fucking illegal" to his buddies. He was scheduled to meet with Chomsky when he got home. He'd turned down a number of requests to be a recruiting poster-boy.
At the same time he was a Ranger squad leader, a job that would have seen him going out on patrols with all kinds of shadowy characters: Task Force 88, Delta, CIA military ops, NSA ELINT spooks and people from units we know nothing about. Such people work outside the normal rules.
It seems quite possible that Tillman saw things that either outraged him or that he wasn't supposed to see. From what's come out about his character I expect he might have spoken up loudly, perhaps even threatening to go public, thus sealing his fate.
Of course, if any of this is anywhere near the truth, we'll never know about it.
