Their workbook gives the following numbers for primary energy consumption in the USA (converted to millions of tonnes of oil equivalent):
1973: 1788.0
1974: 1739.1
1975: 1691.6
1976: 1781.7
1977: 1823.1
1978: 1863.6
1979: 1886.1
There were only two years of decline in the period. By 1977 energy consumption had well surpassed the 1973 level. Increases in efficiency kept the GDP growing for the short period that energy consumption was down.
