I've written a lengthy think piece on population reduction (link below). In it I argue that if the oil goes away as fast as I think it might, the population may need to be reduced to one or two billion people within 75 years to get back into balance with the reduced carrying capacity of the Earth. If that is the case, it would require 100 million to 200 million excess deaths per year for 75 years even in the face of declining birth rates. Since WWII only produced 10 million excess deaths per year for 6 years, its unlikely that resource wars would depopulate the species sufficiently.
