30% of the world's oil exports pass through the Strait of Hormuz

And the Strait is next on this cyclone's target list.

One of the things the oil wonks are wondering is how fast the storm-induced gap in tanker shipments will be able to be made up, given the tightness of the world tanker market. The other thing they're wondering is how the oil loading facilities in the area will fare, given that they are right on the coast, have no protection against storm surges, and are built to much lighter standards than Gulf of Mexico facilities. The third concern is the effect of flooding given the lack of local vegetation and the fact that many towns and villages are built in or near wadis.

The next few days will be interesting, as the storm peters out and the damage assessment begins.
