The problem is that even a successful conversion to some magical alternative energy won't save the day because we've fucked up so much more than just our energy resources. Liebig's Law of the Minimum ensures that a continuously growing species in a finite environment will eventually run out of a critical resource. Whether it's oil or soil doesn't matter - the endgame doesn't change much.
