Yes, we are clever little monkeys. What we lack is foresight and self-restraint. With that combination it's a whole lot easier to get ourselves into trouble than to get ourselves back out.I'm convinced that anyone who thinks we can clever our way out has no understanding of the scale and complexity of the problem set we face. To address this, I've reworked my web site to address the World Problematique, of which climate change and oil depletion are but two elements. I'm not sure how we can invent our way out of fish extinctions, aquifer depletions, desertification, deforestation, oil depletion, climate change, global cultural conflict including asymmetrical warfare and the potential for WMD terrorism - all of which are happening simultaneously.
We're too clever by half, but not half smart enough for our own good.
