The current record for drilling is the Jack 2 exploratory well in the gulf of Mexico that gave all the cornucopians shivers of delight last year. It went down through 7,000 feet of water and 20,000 feet of crust. It was hailed at the time as a trail-blazing accomplishment, but the costs of such drilling are much higher than for more traditional sources. The startup and operating costs of such an operation are estimated to be in the $50/bbl range, and the further you go offshore the more they increase. Add to that the continual inflation in the cost of drilling equipment due to world wide competition for a limited supply of rigs, and you are into the zone of economic unfeasability before you can say "Jack 3".The fact that we are even thinking in these terms shows just how dire the oil supply situation is getting.
