"Greed" has a moral dimension that obscures the underlying mechanisms and shifts the debate to less productive ground. "Don't be greedy, think of others" is a good and valuable admonition, but its historical rate of success has been less than stellar. When you go the next step and ask why so few people heed such obviously good advice, you run smack into genetics and the helping hand of natural selection working over millennia to embed comfort-seeking behaviour patterns.
