I was tremendously disappointed when I saw the contents of that report, mainly because it confirmed my suspicions that there isn't even a "least bad" exit strategy left. The significance of the report seems to be mainly the fact that it was done at all (which is what got everybody so hyped up before it was released), and not in the contents which were, to put it charitably, anti-climactic.However, I disagree with Krauthammer's recommendation that al-Maliki be supported by excluding the most powerful sectarian force in the country (al-Sadr). It's a foolish recommendation that could only lead to an increase in violence. My feeling is that the country has much bigger fish to fry before it can even begin talking about tinkering with the government, and al-Sadr's supporters have to be part of that process for it to have any chance of success. In any event, al-Maliki is looking more and more like a spent force as far as even the illusion of "government control" is concerned.
