I agree that oncology seems to be one of the most suspiciously hidebound branches of medicine.When my 36 year old sister contracted oral cancer 15 years ago, we were treated to front row seats under the Cancer Industry Big Top. When they finally wrote her off eight months after botching the surgery, not a single doctor was willing to even discuss alternative therapies. Slash and burn was the only sanctioned approach, and if that didn't work, well, too bad so sad, next patient please.
I don't really blame the individual doctors, though. They are at serious professional risk of they go off the reservation, and their motives are generally humane (though the expression of those motives may not be). I lay the blame squarely at the feet of the large medical and cancer agencies, the ones who control the funding and research, and who set the tone for the industry.
