I think the outcome will be the same whether we're forcing the issue or not. The only reason it would make a difference whether warming is anthropogenic is if we were able to change our behaviour enough to counteract it. I have come to the reluctant conclusion that human behaviour on this scale is as much a force of nature as solar cycles, and is not under our conscious control. As a result, it really makes no damn difference if we're causing it or not. The reason I made those personal changes was not to save the world, but to simplify and reduce the cost of my own life. In the process my lifestyle has become more sustainable, so if things really do go the way I think they will I will be able to survive on less energy, stuff and money.
My goal in beating the drum is not to make people join some kind of cockamamie, unwinnable world-saving crusade, but to prompt a few to examine the long-term sustainability of their own lives in the face of looming global problems with energy, food and climate.
