Actually, the opposite. It is substance, not style, and objectives rather than appearance that are important. I do believe America is unique in the world. This may be arrogant, but it is based on my experience. And what is the substance of being American? What is the objective of being American? We are different from others. We (try) to do the right thing. We fight when attacked, but we fight clean, even when our enemy doesn't. I agree with you that this is about our survival. But differ in an important aspect. You advocate the preeminence of physical survival. I'm confident we can defeat any enemy with force. I advocate survival of what defines Americans as Americans.I really don't want to be like everyone else, I would strive to be better. And I am not as concerned as you believe about style and appearance.
