The framers of the constitution were concerned about any force that may threaten the citizens, including our own military under the command of a rogue general or commander-in-chief.
"Of course, we won’t get rid of all the guns. There are 200 million guns now in circulation. But since their primary function is to kill living things, why manufacture more? The more guns there are on the street, the more people die. So let’s begin reducing the number of guns and maybe eventually we’ll get rid of them. But we’ll never get rid of them unless we begin."
Brilliant. Who will turn in their guns? Criminals? No, law abiding citizens. That will work real well….for the criminals. And IF this assholes dream could be accomplished, that of only the police and military having guns, how would We the People ever defend ourselves if the police or military could not? Or worse, if we needed to protect ourselves from the police or military.
An armed citizenry is the best defense against tyranny. Period.
