LED is the best home lighting technology currently available.
While newer technologies offer promise down the line there are already efficient technologies in service that best by a wide margin traditional incandescent lighting.
LED pluses:
longevity (usually 30K to 50k hours claimed means infrequent replacement)
less wattage consumed than other types (incandescent, halogen and fluorescent)
no harmful UV (as found in fluorescents and unfiltered halogens)
no heat (as opposed to fluorescent transformer bases or halogen & incandescent bulbs)
pleasing light (soft white and warmer light LED availability increasing)
safety (less prone to catastrophic failure/meltdown issues; no mercury as found in fluorescents)
durable (far less fragile than fluorescents, halogens or incandescent bulbs)
LED minuses:
Cost (LEDs are still quite expensive compared to other types of bulbs and given their longevity will probably continue to be so in the foreseeable future, but they're worth every penny IMO)
Bulb design (LEDs come in all shapes and sizes, but traditional bulb shapes are more difficult to find)
Also, if you're thinking about under-the-counter accent lighting, LED strip lighting is relatively inexpensive.
Cheers,
