Home Outside Asylum

Take a walk, smell the roses. Any topic is fine, save people bashing.

Some of this is true, some not.

My impressions...

> > > 1. NO ONE DOES SATIRE LIKE E.L.M.s - you're a clever crowd, guess! < < <

I guess I'm just not clever enough, because I have no idea what the E.L.M. abbreviation stands for. Sorry.

> > > 2. Places & cultures exclude S.A. and A. and S. - you're a clever crowd. < < <

I'll take a stab at this. I think you mean South America and either Africa or Asia and something else with an "S". Non-American cultures do seem a bit far afield for a chat board where American politics is the primary topic of discussion, but we do have folks posting all sorts of bizarre views from a variety of cultural backgrounds, ...even as far away as Mississippi!

> > > 3. Few people here post on the general asylum; it's as if you come here before the music/equipment forums. < < <

This is true enough. I used to post over in General, before there was an Outside; in fact, I was here at the very start of the Asylum, but that's another story. There is a certain addiction to this forum because it allows folks to vent frustration with anonymity. I'm not sure how healthy that is, but it does provide opportunities for clever word play for those who like that sort of thing. I eschewed the anonymity thing long ago, even though I still use the AuPh moniker.

> > > 4. #2 subject - sports. #3 subject - nature/photography (or both) #4? < < <

Bicycling used to be a hot topic, but I think Lance Armstrong drove a stake through the heart of whatever interest there was in that topic.

> > > 5. No women (romance or sex) discussed, personal or in news. < < <

Sex isn't discussed much because with anonymity comes the realization that one can never be sure of the age of the poster with whom you're having a discussion. Come to think of it romance probably isn't a topic because the jokers on this board rarely get any!

> > > 6. Juvenile over-reactions - real selves revealed or just a persona. < < <

Mostly persona, I presume. Arrogance kind of comes with the turf around here, but again, anonymity is usually a dominant factor in folks acting out on chat boards.

> > > 7. Arts (not only art) - no discussion of except nature/photography & food and drink. < < <

I'm an artist; I post here because I have other interests besides art. Usually less enlightened folks will make fun of artistic tastes they don't appreciate, so it narrows the scope of such discussions.

If folks asked, I'd probably post more examples of my work. I did provide a quick sketch to the Asylum some years ago. It's a goofy little cartoon thing that Rod used over on on Central. You can click on it sometime if you like. It isn't representative of my paintings or detail oriented B&W work, but there you go, an art discussion!

> > > 8. Incredible intolerance and impatience of a seen ignorance of:
a) politics b) economics. < < <

No joke!

> > > 9. Fair intolerance of c) law d) geography. < < <

True again! If you'd mentioned blatant racism & sexism in your next observation you'd have hit the trifecta.

> > > 10. No sources or links for mainstream print news in the u.s. (Newsweek/Time/U.S. News and World Report) - can't imagine why. < < <

Why bother getting "edjuhkated" when you can have fun antagonizing folks with the angry, hateful ramblings of info-tainment sources like Rush Limburger, Faux News and all of the bored bloggers who have nothing better to do than create new conspiracy theories?

Seriously, some of us do read and listen to a variety of mainstream sources. Unfortunately, there are those who will always prefer disseminating uninformed opinions.

> > > 11. No true radicalism in the non-political sense. Meaning independent lifestyle - most here seem to live pretty ''established'' lives. < < <

Mine is established, but atypical. As I mentioned earlier, I'm an artist. My wife is a popular author of fiction (worldwide). I've actually met several of the folks on this board, dined with them and had them over to our home. And even though I'm unabashedly Progressive I have at least one Conservative friend who posts regularly on this board. I won't "out" him here though for fear that he'll be pilloried by some of his conservative buds in the public square for even knowing me. ;^>

> > > 12. True inability to answer some pointed questions; repetition of the original question just gets worse response. < < <

That's a fair statement in respect to many folks, but not all. I think that may falls within your sampling error.

> > > 13. HYPOCRICY. Of all the insults and offensiveness and name-calling, no one calls another a hypocrite. Doesn't inconsistency and contradictions matter? < < <

Again, your sampling error let you down. I've pointed out hypocrisy on numerous occasions. Alas, what I've discovered is that hypocrites don't care. They're usually the same people who post the hateful ramblings of angry talking head info-tainment hustlers. For these folks, loud trumps accuracy every time. With these folks, if they can't turn up the volume on the rhetoric, they go for repetition.

> > > 14. Philosophy means Religion. < < <

Right again!

> > > 15. Health - a non-topic. < < <

Not always. I've noted some posters asking medical advice here (not diagnosis, but rather queries about symptoms and referral assistance), but it is uncommon because for many folks personal health issues are among the most private things in one's life.

OK, Hi-Fi Nut, there you have it. :O)

Cheers,
AuPh
