Bench is/was the gold standard for catchers, period. Schmidt was the best 3rd baseman I ever saw, although the old timers will say Brooks Robinson-George Brett was pretty damned good, too. Koufax was the best lefty starter, although I must say Randy Johnson in his prime was unhittable. I don't know that I've ever seen a more masterful pitcher than Greg Maddux-he and Nolan Ryan are probably my 2 favorite pitchers of all time. Maddux will definitely be shoe-in in his first year of eligibility for the HOF. The best overall 1st baseman is Todd Helton, IMO-one of the greatest hitters ever, and his defense is superlative. Shortstop is tough-I've always loved Ozzie, but Omar Vizquel is every bit his equal, IMO.
