The relative efficiency is due to several factors

Jack Seaton,

There are several reasons why Cameron's house is much more efficient per square foot than mine.

1. Malibu is one of the best climates in terms of energy use as the temperature is moderated by the Ocean. Malibu is rarely above 75F or below 60 whereas I live in the San Fernando Valley- where it was 38F last night and one Saturday in July 2006 it was 119F (and 6% humidity)- over 112 for 5 days in a row.

2. The walls of Cameron's house are a minimum of 8" thick- a number are 14" and have R38 insulation rating whereas the roof is R56. Those are specifications for places like Wyoming and Montana. My house, from 1949 has no insulation in the walls and I'm lucky if the roof has R5 or 8 because the blown-in insulation has settled.

3. The appliances- from the cooktop and stove to the water heating and heating are all the highest efficiency. The refrigerator and freezer are top compressor Sub Zeros- among the most efficient made. By contrast, I have a cooktop with pilot lights and the oven has no insulation, plus I have to run air conditioning about 5 months of the year 16 hours per day- which Cameron's house does not even have air conditioning. Almost no houses in Malibu have A/C- though with climate change- lately more people are adding it.

4. The Windows and doors were custom made, dual glazed with Nitrogen fill and air infiltration standards were triple the Title 24 rules of the time. My house has leaky, single glazed Aluminium sliders- when the wind blows the blinds sway with the windows closed.

5. The pool does not have a heater as in the Malibu climate it's not necessary. Many pools like Cameron's are dark grey or black and absorb enough heat for the Sun. So, there is no energy cost for pool heating.

6. The thickset tile floors and 7/8" plaster walls offer a significant thermal mass- they hold temperature.

Cameron lives really, really quietly -and given the amount he must have pulled in- what, $2 Billion personally? Most of the time, he wears faded T-shirts and shorts that someone gave him.

So, is Cameron supposed to live in a cave and eat raw squirrels? I find it amusing when people who so dearly protect the interests of the super rich- are driven to try and proclaim class traitors. Notice that the disdained, hypocritical "Hollywood elite" never included Reagan, Charlton Heston, Chuck Norris, Schwarzenegger, or Fred Thompson- they all stayed consistently true to protecting the interests of the rich above the public.

Cheers,

Bambi B
