The Twinkle variations is one of his less attractive works, in my opinion, but still not bad. I think the primary reason it's "popular" is due to the theme being universally recognized.
This piano music is far superior, as is much of his chamber music: the piano quintets, the cello sonata, serenade for string trio, etc. I also like the piano concertos. I liked all this music so much, I decided to try the solo piano music, and it is a pleasant discovery.
