Rubinstein played a recital in Milwaukee around 1970. A boyfriend of mine at the time was an usher in the hall and got me a seat on stage a couple feet from maestro's left hand. I got to meet him back stage; he was a lovely gentleman.
Osmo Vanska and Minnesota played a Mahler 1st at Avery Fisher some years back. It was shattering. Afterwards, about half the audience went out to the plaza and just stood around, mostly silent, to come down from the experience.
One more: honorable mention to the Bohème at Hunter College last year by the Martina Arroyo Foundation. There was open weeping in the audience... in act *three* which set up the final act to be completely overwhelming.
