The Minnesota Orchestra with Osmo Vanska returned to New York last night for a Sibelius gig. They did the Symphony #3, the Violin Concerto with Hilary Hahn, and the Symphony #1. It was a great night: Hahn was breathtaking, the 3rd was fascinating new music for me, and the 1st was... very different. Vanska's approach to the 1st was hyper-aggressive throughout, with much faster tempi than I've ever heard. I kept thinking, "This isn't going to work," but it did, building tension through the piece that was released in a spectacular finale.
The view from the cheap seats: $54 including taxes and fees. The eagle-eyed will notice a number of hanging SDC mics, actually fifteen that I counted. The BIS people are apparently not fans of minimalist micing. (Or maybe they are - it's possible they use two or three omnis as the base for everything, filling in with the others as instruments go MIA due to comb-effect or other problems. I'd love to learn how they actually did it, because I like the results they get.)
It was a lovefest, all the way through three encores. Welcome back, Minnesota, we missed you.
