Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

try this

Listen for the music. *Really* listen - get to know the piece. A great performance of a great piece can carry you away, even if the recording is awful. If you do this, you'll certainly find some really great recordings, which adds to the fun, but great sound will never take you to a wonderful place. A great recording will never bring tears to your eyes, but a great performance can, even at home.

When listening to a great work, the more you learn about it, the more powerful it can be for you. Start reading scores, learn some music theory, and when you hear a masterpiece it will become *lots* more powerful, not less. Music is unique because the more you know about how it's done, the more magical it becomes.

Really bad/noisy recordings take some adjustment. I've got a 1955 Traviata with Callas, DiStefano, and Giulini, on a private label LP. Horrible recording in every way. But if you let yourself relax and adjust to the lousy sound, that performance can be transformative.

In this particular case, the sound is probably pretty good, and Hickox may be wonderful with it. Get it. I also have to agree with jazz1 - redbook CD *can* be very good.

Enjoy.
